Yorktown High School student's work will be displayed at U.S. Capitol for one year.
More than 60 pieces of art created by high school students across the 8th Congressional District will be on display at the Artisphere in Rosslyn through June 17. The exhibition is the result of the annual Congressional Art Competition, which began in 1982 to give members of Congress a chance to encourage and recognize young artistic talent. "Lady of Rain," a photograph by 18-year-old Ryan Carroll, a Yorktown High School senior, won the contest and will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol along with the winners from other congressional districts across the country. The black-and-white photograph depicts a woman on a beach in Massachusetts looking across the water toward distant smokestacks. She's holding an umbrella, unfurled, which itself …

Open house will be held Thursday night and Saturday morning.
Arlington County elected officials and representatives of a wide range of community organizations will gather at Artisphere this week to launch the PLACE initiative. PLACE -- Participation, Leadership And Civic Engagement -- is the brainchild of board Chairwoman Mary Hynes and is designed to help revamp and reinvigorate the Arlington Way. The Arlington Way got its name in the 1980s, but the practice of involving residents across the political and socio-economic spectrum goes back to the 1950s, Hynes said. People moved here to support America's efforts during World War II and they decided to stay -- and to find ways to get involved. "There's this long tradition of people who had all kinds of fancy titles downtown doing important national …

Artisphere is the first and only U.S. venue to host exhibition.
An exhibition of 240 personal photographs of renown Mexican artist Frida Kahlo debuted Thursday at Artisphere in Rosslyn, the first and only U.S. venue to present the work. "Frida Kahlo: Her Photos" runs through March 25. More than 6,500 personal photographs and items belonging to Kahlo and her husband and artist Diego Rivera were sealed and put into storage upon Kahlo's death in 1954, according to Artisphere. The collection was opened, inventoried and catalogued in 2007. Kahlo was a lifelong resident of the Mexico City suburb Coyoacán, one of Arlington's sister cities. Arlington County Board member Chris Zimmerman personally went to Coyoacán at his own expense to make sure the exhibit landed in Rosslyn. "This is big," Vice Chairman Walter…

Artisphere hosts several prominent political cartoonists, their art, a rock group formed of district journalists, and onlookers of all stripes.
For some Americans, the end of the Mayan calendar and our world's foretold collapse is reason to stockpile canned goods and build shelters; for Artisphere and Art Soiree, it is an excuse to host a party and showcase some art. At least that is what they did Thursday night in Artisphere's Terrace Gallery. The party did more than relieve anxieties. It helped jumpstart ApocalypToon 2012, a three-day "pop-up exhibition" celebrating the coming year through the work of a handful of political cartoonists whose work was blown up to atypical proportions and strewn across the gallery walls. Judging by the packed floorspace, and the engaged crowd, opening night was a hit. The show featured several Washington-based cartoonists as well as a few more …

Publicly funded cultural arts center will get a chief financial officer.
Artisphere will cut back on the hours it’s open to the public and rely more on business, social and other event rentals as part of a larger effort to move the cultural arts center toward financial stability. A revised business plan for Artisphere, located in the former Newseum space in Rosslyn, was presented to the Arlington County Board on Tuesday. It calls on the facility to rely on a resident caterer rather than a full-service restaurant, eliminates a retail shop and moves toward establishing a nonprofit corporation to raise funds for the endeavor. Artisphere received $2.1 million in taxpayer dollars from Arlington County in its first year of operation – about 65 percent of its budget. It’s expected to need $2.3 million this year, and …

The Rosebud Film and Video Festival is the …

Five things to know about what's going on in and around Arlington.
1. Starting Oct. 31, Harry's Tap Room in Clarendon will undergo a three-week transformation and will emerge as the Market Tavern, Eater DC reports. The remade restaurant is expected to open by Nov. 21. 2. Democratic state Senate candidate Barbara Favola won two endorsements this week. The Washington Post praised Favola, saying she "would be effective in the Senate from Day 1." The Sun Gazette's support was less glowing: "This is not a slam-dunk endorsement; each candidate brings strengths and weaknesses. On balance, however, we opt for Favola in hopes she will grow in stature in the capital as she has, over the years, on the Arlington board." Clarendon Patch and Ballston Patch do not endorse candidates. 3. ARLNow.com spotted a "now hiring…
