Project includes burying utility lines between South Wakefield and Four MIle Run Drive.
The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved a $5.7 million contract to bury utility lines and construct street improvements along a portion of Columbia Pike. The improvements are part of the second phase of the county's Columbia Pike Initiative, according to a news release. The affected portion of the Pike is between South Wakefield Street and Four Mile Run Drive. Once utility lines are underground, Alexandria-based Sagres Construction Corp. will begin building wider sidewalks, new lighting and bus shelters, and planting trees along the street. The Arlington County Board on Saturday unanimously approved spending up to $1.7 million for extensive upgrades to a Lyon Village dog park. Renovation to James Hunter Park, on the corner of North Herndon and 13th streets, should begin this summer. Plans call for a 1,200-square-foot plaza, a solar-powered water feature and irrigation system and a "pet comfort station." "Just steps from the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, this park is going to be a small gem — offering great facilities built using sustainable materials and practices,” Chairwoman Mary Hynes said in a statement. Friday was Bike to Work Day.
The Ballston Business Improvement District was out bright and early Friday to celebrate a new Capital Bikeshare station and promote Bike to Work Day. The BID, as it is called, planted itself in front of Freshbikes, 3924 Wilson Blvd., giving away aluminum water bottles and bicycle-friendly water bags. People signed up for a raffle to win one of two iPods or autographed Washington Capitals gear — including a jersey signed by the 2011-12 team, a puck signed by Mike Green and a hockey stick signed by Alex Ovechkin. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate answered questions in appearance at AOL's Dulles office.
U.S. Senate hopeful Tim Kaine said the federal government should chip in for the Silver Line Phase 2 — but that the commonwealth also needs to pay a bigger share than the $150 million it has promised to ensure it gets built as scheduled. "What we are seeing in Washington is an anti-investment mentality," Kaine (D) told a group at AOL's Dulles headquarters Thursday. He said he worked with the Bush and Obama administrations to get $900 million for the first phase and the next phase has centered on who pays for it. Republican primary election set for U.S. Senate candidates; Democratic primary election scheduled for 8th Congressional District.
Arlington voters will head to the polls on June 12 for the 8th Congressional District and the hotly contested U.S. Senate races. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one. If you aren't registered to vote, you have until 5 p.m. May 21 to register. Voter registration applications must be postmarked by that day or dropped off in the Arlington County Office of Voter Registration by 5 p.m. If you are 17 years old now but will turn 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. By Leah Small Capital News Service Beginning July 1 women getting mammograms will learn whether they have dense breast tissue that could hide cancer, thanks to recent legislation that addresses the test’s failure to detect certain cancers in women with dense breast tissue. Under the new law, if radiologists conducting mammograms find dense breast tissue, they must send the patient a letter noting that fact—and that dense breast tissue can hide cancer. The letter will urge women to talk to their physicians about the matter. The new “patient inform” law resulted from efforts by a breast cancer survivor, Cathryn Tatusko of Fairfax County, with support from an aptly named national awareness organization called Are You Dense.
