Holiday Harmony
Potomac Harmony Chorus put on a special holiday concert and sing-along benefitting Doorways Sunday.
They came, they sang and everyone left smiling. The exuberant and enthusiastic Ozzi Mask, master director of Potomac Harmony Chorus had everyone in the audience singing along at the concert and sing-along to benefit Doorways for Women and Families Sunday.
"It's our privilege and our honor to sing for Doorways," said Mask. "We're so happy to add to the joy of the holiday season for the chorus and for the audience."
Potomac Harmony Chorus (PHC), the local chapter of sweet Adelines International presented the free community event, titled "Letters To Home" at the Thomas Jefferson Theater in Arlington.
Emcee, Alan Wile read several touching and humorous letters before introducing the songs and musical performances, which included traditional holiday music and carols. Audience members were provided with songbooks to join in as the group performed standards like "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Auld Lang Syne" and "Jingle Bells."
Patty Meyer, an associate member with the chorus served as an usher; she was just one of many volunteers who helped at the event. "I wanted to come and enjoy the show with this wonderful group of ladies," Meyer said.
Jill Zacharie attended the concert with her friend, Theresa Nugent. "We're barbershop fans and the Potomac Harmony Chorus has a great sound and I'm exposing my friend to them," Zacharie said.
The non-profit music education association accepts females over the age of 13, who are interested in learning and performing the American folk art of four-part harmony. "It's amazing to realize that it's just the voices-- with a cappella singing," Zacharie said.
Lara Lukaszek, special events coordinator at Doorways was accepting voluntary donations at the door. One hundred percent of the money collected will be donated to the Arlington nonprofit, whose mission is to end homelessness and domestic violence.
"It was great to see the community come out and support Doorways and Potomac Harmony Chorus," said Lukaszek. "This will help us with our end of the year goal to keep our shelters warm and it's a good reminder during the holidays to help those who are less fortunate."
