Holiday Glam Dressing 101
Dressing for those holiday parties can be rough, but here are some quick tips to look and feel good.
Putting together a great look for a holiday party can sometimes be a daunting task—what woman has not experienced a panic attack as she surveys half her closet spread out on her bed and decides that she has "nothing to wear" right before an important event?
"Glamming it up" for the holidays can be easy, fun and need not break the bank, according to Danielle Sigwalt, a local blogger (www.freshquince.blogspot.com), who makes recommendations on eco-friendly home décor and fashion.
"My biggest thing is that you don't have to buy new to have great design," she said.
We tagged along with Sigwalt while she shopped at Current Boutique in Clarendon, one of her favorite consignment shops-- and took notes on her favorite strategies to look great at all those holiday events.
"Black is always a go-to," said Sigwalt as she modeled a stunning black Ralph Lauren purple label blouse, which retailed originally for $1,295; the shop has it for $329. She chooses an eggplant Escada wool skirt, $100 and a thin leather belt, $30. It's a perfect look for a corporate holiday party or to attend a special performance at the Kennedy Center.
To show off details of the collar, Sigwalt pulls her hair back into a ponytail, which is an easy and quick solution for long hair.
Amanda DeSanto, manager of the boutique, explained, "I always like a statement piece like the Ralph Lauren blouse because it's something that will leave an impression and you'll stand out in a crowd."
Accessorizing an outfit with the right pieces can pull it all together. Sigwalt chooses three rhinestone bracelets, $33 each for the small ones and $42 for the cuff. A gold clutch by Urban Expressions, $49 and black patent leather Joan and David pumps, $46 are added to complete the look.
Sigwalt explained that just adding some bling to a little black dress easily transforms a look from day to evening. Or take a business suit and put a sexy silk or satin blouse to create a festive nighttime outfit.
For those who do not look good in black, Gina Destro, assistant manager at the shop, recommends sequins or gold. A silver sequined dress with 3 bows accenting a peek-a-boo back by Aryn K. is $90 and would be a great choice for a New Year's Eve soiree. Wearing black tights, Sigwalt said, is a trend that would be a smart option for a short skirt in cold weather.
Because sequins add so much sparkle, Sigwalt keeps it simple-- by accessorizing with a metallic gunmetal clutch, $80 and a Lucite ring, $80.
"Nighttime is when you can be more dramatic with your make-up—if you play up the eyes then downplay the lips and vice-versa." The key is not to have too much going on at once.
Sigwalt also suggests planning ahead all the components of a look to avoid committing a fashion faux pas. "You see someone come [to a party] with their big navy purse and a gorgeous outfit because they didn't think about the little things and you can find all these really beautiful vintage clutches in consignment shops."
Ultimately it's about feeling comfortable and attractive so you can just enjoy yourself. "If you're not comfortable showing off your legs, then don't do it that one night—do what feels comfortable," said Sigwalt.
Destro and DeSanto have clearly enjoyed helping Sigwalt with her choices. Asked for her best advice on holiday dressing, DeSanto said, "Definitely always bling—it's a perfect time to snazz it up with a great bracelet or necklace or earrings—one big sparkly piece!"
